What is Steampunk?
Steampunk is a literary / aesthetic movement based on 19th century science fiction. A bit like taking the 19th century and projecting it straight to the 21st century and skipping all that nasty stuff with world wars and nuclear weapons.
There is a thriving steampunk community in Brisbane with devotees meeting at various occasions such as Supanova and Prometheus Bound to show off their costumes and gadgets.

Major-General Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane, 1st Baronet, GCH, GCB, FRS, FRSE was perhaps best known as Governor of New South Wales from 1821-1825. The Brisbane River and the city of Brisbane were named after him. Lord Brisbane was a keen astronomer and a Fellow of the Royal Society. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium is named after him.
This recently ‘discovered’ picture reveals that Lord Brisbane was a keen exponent of the bassoon.
